Derived Metrics Model

Some global statistics are not directly reported by any single primary source — they are derived by combining two authoritative indicators: a reference base and an official percentage ratio. This page documents the model, its inputs, and which metrics use it.

The Formula

The model multiplies an absolute reference base by an official percentage-based ratio, both sourced independently from authoritative organizations.

Derivedtotal=Basereference×Ratioofficial

Both inputs must come from independent, authoritative primary sources. The ratio is applied as a decimal (e.g. 57% becomes 0.570). Real-time projection is then applied using the Continuous Growth Model to estimate the current value between official data releases.

Transparency & Limitations

Strengths

Both inputs are sourced from official UN and ITU data, publicly available and independently verifiable. The calculation is fully auditable.

Annual data lag

Percentage-based ratios are released annually with a 6–18 month lag. The real-time projection applies a compound growth rate to estimate the current value.

Uniform growth assumption

Growth rates are assumed constant between official releases. Regional and seasonal variation is not captured at the global aggregate level.

These counters are educational tools designed to visualize the scale of global phenomena. They use a transparent, auditable method based on the latest official data.
